Apple & Chia Jam

Apple & Chia Healthy Baby Jam Baby Led Feeding.

My amazing neighbours this week gave me the biggest bucket of apples I have ever seen. The kids and I have been peeling and puréeing apples for days and trying to come up with great ideas on what we could use them for. One of the simplest and quickest and healthiest things to cook is chia jam. Chia seeds are simply amazing! They are high in fibre, rich in omega 3 and can absorb 10 times their size and weight in water. This jam does not contain sugar but it is still lovely and sweet due to the lovely sweet apples and I have added a small amount of maple syrup (just to make it taste a bit more like the normal homemade jams). It tastes yummy on pancakes or toast and stores in sterilised jars for months.

Ingredients

Method

  • Place 2 cups of puréed apple into a small saucepan over a medium heat.
  • When the sauce starts to bubble turn the heat down to low and add the chopped sweet apple to the pot along with the maple syrup. Simmer for approx 10-15 minutes (or until the chopped apple is really soft). Stir often to prevent it sticking.
  • Add in your chia seeds, stir well and simmer with the lid off for about 10 more minutes stirring often.
  • The chia seeds should expand and become almost jelly like and absorbing liquid.
  • When your jam is thickened pour into hot sterilised jars. Tap the jars to remove any air bubbles and seal.
  • Serve on anything! – Pancakes, bread, toast….
